| Notes | The poet-speaker of the poem thinks of his own role as peacekeeper and soldier in the war. He also considers the role of the freedom-fighter on the warpath of reprisal, aiming to make a name for himself by throwing grenades through school bus windows and killing children. Role of nature is important in this poem, with the 'frenzy' being alighting sparrows on a roadside bush; trees being torn by wind; avalanches of the waves coming towards him on the shore. Sparrows and birds in general are a common motif in Whelan's poetry. |
