Paratext Text | For Michael Walsh (GOAL Secondment 1994) |
Notes | This poem is dedicated to an Irish soldier who was seconded to work for the Irish charity, GOAL, during the Rwandan Genocide. The poem discusses some of the most horrific aspects of the Rwandan genocide, including the mass graves, machete'd limbs and bodies, and the sickening of starving children, as well as the activities of the soldier, who must stuff his nose with tiger balm to be able to transport the dead. The poem concludes with a young child being treated by the soldier, yet the soldier knows that 'he is going to die.' |
