| Notes | Speculative poem in which the speaker appears to describe a situation in which the prospects for peace are only possible with the establishment of a 'New World Order' kind of state. There are many unusual images in the poem: a 'rubble hospital', 'a dead newborn', etc. The teacher in Palestine, who delivers the dead baby, and is also a history PhD, is an intriguing figure. Could this represent a real person/ Is the speaker of the poem saying that the only prospect for peace is a totalitarian, post-war regime? |
