Notes The speaker of the poem describes his desire to attack a man who has wrought suffering and death upon a unnamed village in a conflict zone. Despite his wish to avenge the dead and terrorized, the speaker of the poem, an Irish peacekeeping soldier, can only abide by the rules of engagement - meaning that force can only be used in self-defence and to protect the mandate. The speaker doesn't act upon his wish for vengeance.
