Notes | The speaker of the poem here is referencing the rise of Ruhollah Khomeini, the first supreme leader of Iran, who deposed the last Shah and ended the 2,500 year old Persian monarchy. More significantly, he also instigated a régime of Sharia law, which oppressed woman, LGBT people, and other minorities in Iran. The poem here references seeing Iran's new leader on television, and also notably refers to the 'cailleacha dubha' of the country - 'black witches/veiled women' - which is most likely a nod to the Iranian women forced to wear full Islamic dress under Sharia law. |
