Notes | An unnamed war is threatening in this poem. The poem opens with a scene of two people separating, possibly a husband and wife at the beginning of a conflict. Garden statues, who will never 'walk home' are also noted in the second verse of the poem. Does this refer to maimed, or possibly dead, soldiers, who will never succeed in returning home after this unnamed conflict? The 'straggler' in the poem appears to be the man who sits at the table at the beginning of the poem, and who prepares to leave for war here, heading towards 'eternity'. |
