Notes This poem has a number of references to Catholic Church figures. The 'comharba Eugenio Pacelli' refers to Pope John Paul II. The 'Romero' in the poem refers to Bishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, who was assassinated in San Salvador, in 1980. Romero spoke out frequently against the Salvadoran dictatorship, and encouraged the poor to fight for their own rights in this life, which led to the left-wing resistance to the dictatorship increasing. He was assassinated while celebrating mass in 1980. He had previously tried to engage Pope John Paul with his concerns but the anti-communist Pope refused to act on his concerns. The Pope went on to visit San Salvador in 1983, which is likely what is referenced in the poem.
