Notes A vignette from an unspecified war. The speaker of this poem describes a mother and child hidden amidst a scene of utter carnage and devastation. Corpses and rubble line the streets during an ongoing battle as the woman attempts to stifle the child's cries so that they will escape the killing. However, a stray soldier spots her while urinating against a wall, and kills them both without much thought. A morose picture of the realities of war.
