Notes The speaker of this short poem references the Spanish Civil War through Hemingway's novel 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', which was set in Segovia. The novel focussed on an American volunteer to the Republican side of the war. The speaker is reminded of Hemingway in Segovia, and the references to floods of blood are significant. Segovia was also the location of a Republican diversionary manoeuvre in 1937, which failed due to Nationalist air power.
