Notes | The speaker of the poem reminisces with a past version of himself over the rise of communism as the new empire of the world. Empires have come and gone since the speaker has grown, but the Russian Communist 'empire' is the greatest one still remaining. The speaker of the poem hints as well as the continuing oppression of the Russian regime - describing it as 'slualeas gan saoirse' - 'the wellbeing of the crowd, without freedom'. |
