Notes | This poem is based in Dublin during the Emergency years of 1939-1945. The speaker of the poem reflects on soldiers from Ireland leaving for Britain during the war, and working in the British Army during WW2. They worked especially as gunners in bombing planes, raining down explosives upon the old cities of Europe. Many of them did not survive the war. The speaker's own father was supposed to go, but missed the boat as he was drunk. The underlying theme of his father's alcoholism is present throughout the poem. |
