Notes | This poem describes the treatment of women, by society and by religion. The speaker of the poem wishes for a goddess in place of the male God, since many religious traditions have historically discriminated against women. There is special mention here of menstrual blood, 'churching' and purification after birth, and women having to cover themselves up before entering a religious temple or church. |
