Notes | The speaker of the poem is one of 'Butcher Harris'' boys in the RAF. Butcher Harris was Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur Travers Harris. Butcher Harris was vilified after the war for having caused the deaths of so many German civilians. In this poem, the speaker revels in the destruction and carnage caused by their bombing of Germany - the cities of Dortmund, Berlin, Hamburg, and so forth. The speaker of the poem describes a bomb they carry as a 'Cookie for Adolf', and this flippant tone is prevalent throughout the poem, as the men revel in the destruction that they bring. |
