Notes This poem most likely refers to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and to the violent Soviet response to it. Beginning as a student protest, the Revolution ended up becoming the most serious threat to the Soviet Union since World War II. The speaker of the poem is horrified by the actions of the Soviets in violently suppressing the revolution, and condemns them for their brutality - and also for their disregard and enmity towards Christ and religion in general. The speaker appears to call for divine intervention as well, in order to prevent the barbarous Russians' advance.
