| Notes | The speaker of the poem reflects of the destruction of normal life due to warfare. A spring scene in Ireland is overlaid with an ominous threat of lurking war in the background. There are explicit references to Vietnam here, as well as 'Poncánacht' - Americanization. It is heavily implied that an entire Vietnamese family is killed in the poem. There are also hints at atomic bombs and warfare in the poem, with the 'úlla Dé' - 'God's Apples' - possibly referring to nuclear bombs or airstrikes. War itself is personified here and is described as 'screaming' - 'a bridge over the river'! |
