| Notes | The speaker of the poem is frustrated by someone near him speaking in a knowledgable way about war, likely World War I due to the references to 'Krauts' (derogatory name for German troops) and the trenches. He reminds them forcefully that they in truth have no knowledge of the horrors of war - they were a recruitment officer and never had to suffer a real war. The speaker of the poem has little patience for this man's rambling about the war, when he has never even held a gun. |
