Notes This poem is a reflection on the post-war landscape of Srebrenica, Bosnia. The 'before' Srebrenica in the first line may refer to temporal: before the genocidal acts at Srebrenica; or perhaps spatially, the valley before one arrives in Srebrenica. Based on the descriptions of 'ghosts', it is probably the latter. An idyllic pastoral scene is presented in the poem of rural Bosnian life, but speaker is mindful of the past atrocities: the ruined houses, beckoning ghosts, and headstones that hint at the Bosnian war and genocide.
