Paratext Text | Mauritshaus The Hague 23 April 2009 |
Notes | At time of composition, the poet-speaker of this poem was visiting the Hague for the United Nationas Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. As in previous poem in the collection, 'Deathly pale', which also dealt with paintings, the poet-speaker seems intensely aware of the humanity of the paintings he observes, influenced by his attendance of the Tribunal. Here, the emphasis is on the 'humanity' - the 'human face' of Rembrandt's paintings. |
