Paratext Text | ''Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid'' Vermeer The Royal Picture Gallery The Hague 2013 |
Notes | The speaker of the poem reflects on disaster and genocide in Bosnia through his memories of the Hague and of Mauritshuis, during the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Here, he uses a previous poem, 'Blown Away', which references the 'legions of the lost' of Bosnia, as part of the middle of this longer poem. He makes use of Vermeer's 'Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid' as part of the poem too. This is a famous a painting that was stolen by the IRA and recovered some years ago. There is also a reference to Miriam and the story of Moses, and a possible reference to the poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill's collection 'Pharaohs Daughter'. The poem also mentions the English wars in the Netherlands, which occurred in the 17th Century. |
