| Notes | This poem contains explicit reference to a 'shadowy' Aleppo, a significant city in Syria. At the time of composition, as noted in the paratext as 2014, Syria was experiencing a brutal civil war. The ants are portrayed here as mindless humans, going about their business, utterly unaware of the 'shadowy' conflicts of the world on the 'far high shore', a good distance from the realities of their lives. |
