Notes This poem, 'In the Marches', explores the area of Jasenovac, in which an infamous Ustaše concentration camp existed during World War II. This section contains a reference to the karst caves of Jasenovac concentration camp, into which victims of the Ustaše Nazi puppet regime - Jews, Serbs, and Roma - would be thrown; the camp was renowned for its violent torture methods. The poem also contains a reference to the Greek Eurydice myth, when the musician Orpheus failed to bring his lover Eurydice back from the underworld. This alludes to those who were thrown down the pit and who did not return during the Ustaše regime.
