Notes | The poppies in this poem are reminiscent of war dead, particularly those of the World Wars - I and II. The poem mentions the eight wars of the last Balkan century, likely including the World Wars and various conflicts in the break-up of Yugoslavia. The second verse of the poem seems to refer to the Syrian refugee crisis and its many casualties in the wake of the Syrian Civil War. Those who die at sea are noted in this verse - the 'sea dead off Roman Libya'. |
