Notes Poet’s Note (from online publication): 'These poems that I submitted are a part of my experience as a volunteer in an immigrant detention centre in Northern Ireland. They were written in Italian and translated into English by the poet Maria McManus. The English language versions appear beneath the poems.' – Viviana Fiorentino. This is a short poem describing the currents of the Atlantic ocean - on the sea bed of the speaker's life. Could this refer to the trials of the refugee, trying to find a new home across the ocean? The 'dream' of the 'burnished pearl' could refer to the hope the speaker has of a new life, as a refugee, in a safe place.
