| Notes | Poet’s Note from other online publication: 'These poems that I submitted are a part of my experience as a volunteer in an immigrant detention centre in Northern Ireland. They were written in Italian and translated into English by the poet Maria McManus. The English language versions appear beneath the poems.' In this poem, the speaker describes the 'rose garden' of her childhood and her memories of it - so strong that they are inside her blood. The speaker also reflects on her desire and will to live. Even when she is at risk of drowning, she defiantly closes her lips tight to the saltwater all around her. Does this refer to the refugee journey across the Mediterranean Sea, where so many have drowned? |
