Notes The speaker of this poem describes his own 'Tagore Song'. 'Tagore Songs' are another name for Rabindra Sangeet songs, written by the Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. This poem makes reference to the poet's homeland and culture, both of which he hasn't experienced in person. His understanding of his homeland comes to him from his mother, his 'Mashi', who describes aspects of his homeland and language to him. He is able to see 'through her eyes / the homeland where I have never been'. The poem expresses the deep connection of a first-generation immigrant child to their parent's homeland - a place where many of them have never been.
