Notes | The speaker of this poem refuses to accept ambivalence in relation to human rights abuses - cases of genocide, wars, massacres, and colonial atrocities. Numerous events and people are alluded to in the poem, including the Holocaust, Bosnian Genocide, Rwandan Genocide, Pol Pot (Cambodian Genocide), My Lai, Wounded Knee, Katyn USSR massacre, Amristar (British colonial massacre of Indians), Deir Yassin, and atrocities committed by King Leopold II in the Congo Free State. There is an explicit reference to pedophilia as an abuse of the rights of the child. The speaker accuses the mainstream media of complicity by not condemning such atrocities outright. |
