Notes | This poem appears to be a reversal of the Christian origin myth, when God created the world in 7 days. Humankind is cast in the role of 'God' at the beginning of the poem but its destruction of the environment plays out over the 7 days - before, on Sunday, nature reacts with plagues, floods, and insects, bringing retribution. This poem can be read in the context of other poems by Alan Titley that focus on the relationship between the human and the more-than-human, and implicitly on the rights of nature. See: 'An Filiméala', 'Fios an Chrainn', 'Máthair na Mara', 'Haikúnna ar Fhómhar an Chaipitleachais', and 'Fionnachtain', for example. |
