Notes The poet-speaker of the poem describes her displacement from her home place, and her journeys through Europe on her way to Ireland. Notably, she mentions the outbreak of the of World War II in Poland, and the Calais refugee camp, noted as being free from refugees at that time. There are also references to the landscape of Ireland and the attitude of the Irish people. The poem describes the speaker's long journey across the continent, fleeing from Communist Hungary.
