Paratext Text | Patroness of the Lock Hospital, Townsend Street, Dublin |
Notes | St Margaret of Cortona was before her conversion the lover of a nobleman in Montepulciano, Italy. She is the patron saint of the Lock Hospital, which mainly treated women with sexually transmitted diseases. Many of them were prostitutes. The poem presents scenes of violence and misogyny, drawing on the life of the Italian saint to address questions of women's fates in 19th and 20th c Ireland. First published in The Brazen Serpent (1994). |
