Notes This poem is part five of a sequence entitled 'Mise agus an Leabhar i gCaifé na Beatha'. While this part of the poem doesn't have its own paratext, the overall sequence does: 'I dare not go deeply into this book, for if I did, I would stay with it forever and I wouldn't return...' John Berger (art critic and novelist). In this part of the sequence, the speaker of the poem describes a café scene, in which a woman refugee is serving the men in the café. The poet notes himself as feel awkward, as his shadow might trip up the woman before she reaches the sanctuary of the counter (this turn of phrase is likely significant).
