Notes The poem draws its German language title from a 1904 song cycle by Gustav Mahler. The reference to 'dead children' implies war. While the poem appears to comment on violence against children during the Northern Irish Troubles, it should also be read alongside Longley's other poems informed by WWII. First published in An Exploded View: Poems 1968-72.
