Notes The epigraph is from the French translation of Paradise Lost. These lines of poetry are followed by sections in prose written by J. M. Keynes, where the focus is on the economic conditions of the treaty of Versailles after the First World War. In describing the conditions which Germany had to accept in the treaty, the text also points to the future in acknowledging how the treaty would contribute to the rise of the Third Reich and the Second World War.
