Paratext Text | Cill na Naomh, Íle 1598 - Nyange, Ruanda 1994 |
Notes | The speaker of the poem reflects instances of extreme violence in two very different contexts: The Battle of Traigh Ghruinneart on the Isle of Islay, Scotland, in1598, and the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi at Nyange Church in Rwanda. In both instances, acts of mass violence were perpetrated on people seeking refuge in a place of worship - the chapel of Kilnave and the Nyange Church, respectively. The speaker of the poem imagines the speechless skulls beseeching the deaf ears of history. |
