Notes | This sequence juxtaposes the indominable spirit of coloured people and their enduring musical legacy with specific instances of race-based injustice. The title of each part of the sequence is indicative of the subject matter: slavery in the cotton economy in Louisiana is detailed in the first part of the sequence; the second part focuses on the mass displacement of African Americans due to flooding of the Mississippi river in 1927 and the patronizing treatment of families in the Baton Rouge camps; flooding as well as structural inequalities and institutional racism are referenced in the third part of the sequence, titled 'Katrina 29 August 2009'. The final part of the sequence concerns a concert in Dublin given by American musician Allen Toussaint, which connects back to the theme of musicality among people of colour. |
