Notes | This poem describes the death of a prisoner in the electric chair. It is written in the form of an Italian sonnet. The speaker bears witness to the prisoner's physical pain in his last moments of life and makes explicit reference to the apathy of the guards 'faces blanker than asphalted yards'. Death by electric chair is depicted here as a form of torture. |
