Notes | The poem forms part of a sequence of lyrics written about the death of the poet's mother. Sexton employs the world of video games and Super Mario interspersed with fragments of private memories between past and present. The collection is written in two parts. The specific poem refers to the cruelty of world news disseminated daily in newspapers and juxtaposes these to the news of Henry's death in Tasmania. Themes of emigration from Ireland to Australia are interlaced with fragmented memories of mines, labour, and harsh working conditions. Henry's emigration and death are recounted in another poem in the collection, titled 'Donut Plains 2'. |
