Notes The poem forms part of a sequence of lyrics written about the death of the poet's mother. In this collection, Sexton employs the world of video games and Super Mario interspersed with fragments of private memories between past and present. The collection is written in two parts. In this particular poem, the speaker expresses his sense of emptiness caused by the void the death of his mother has left behind. One of the most powerful metaphors in the narrative references the nuclear catastrophe in Chernobyl evoking the impact on the non-human, on nature and the environment.
