Paratext Text for Siobhan, Fiona, Rita, Sinead
Notes The poem addresses issues of women's health and reproductive rights through the figure of an underage Irish pregnant girl who is forced to travel to England in order to terminate her pregnancy. The title -full of irony- refers to the only two options available to women living in Ireland at the time: either to remain in Ireland (where abortion is illegal), give birth and leave on perpetual social exclusion while receiving state benefits or migrate and risk your life in order to get an abortion. The poem is dedicated to four women: Siobhan, Fiona, Rita, and Sinead. It is included in the collection The Fly and the Bedbug published by Beaver Row Press (1984).
