Notes | The poem is included in Bardwell's collection Dostoevsky’s Grave (Dedalus Press, 1991) and is written about a woman called Lila who lived during the Irish Famine. Lila's potatoes are described as black and remind the speaker of her kids and her life in 'lazy beds'. The poem addresses themes of emigration to London where her kids were forced to work in underground pubs and strip halls to survive. |
