Notes Casement's translated poem is a version inspired by Victor Hugo's 1831 poetry collection Les Feuilles d'Automne. It refers to the struggle for independence of Greece, Ireland, and France. In a letter Roger Casement wrote to Gertrude Bannister in 1913, he argues that the poem was translated and rewritten to lambast Queen Victoria and that even though Hugo's poem was written in the past it "applies all the time."
