Notes This poem describes the slow but inexorable process of American colonization: the ways of the native peoples of America have been overcome by the ways of the colonists. The speaker of the poem mentions the strict rules of oppression brought in by the foreign settlers, expressed through the logical and formulaic construction of the New York Streets. The setting of the poem is Broadway, a famous area of New York City. Broadway was originally, however, the Wickquasgeck trail, carved into the brush of Manhattan by its Native American inhabitants.
