Notes This poem describes police brutality and violence against black and brown communities in America. Described in terms of a 'mediaeval' event, the poem's setting is a street in a deprived neighbourhood in which a young black man is being searched by white police officers. The poem underlines how witnesses to the event - all black - stand in silence, afraid of antagonising the white officers. The speaker of the poem also describes the various immigrant communities and their shops in the location - including a garishly-painting shop called 'Irish Things', an image with which the speaker ends the poem. This might call attention to the Irish emigrant community and their relative social mobility, compared to other emigrant groups.
