Notes | Spoken from the perspective of a young Iraqi girl caught in the crosshairs of war, this lyric sequence in six parts describes her life in Baghdad before and after an explosive kills her family. There are explicit references in the poem to the noise and terror of war, her current poverty, lack of education, the hostile nature of foreign soldiers stationed in Baghdad to 'protect' the population, as well as the psychological effects of such turmoil on a young person. |
