Notes | This is a rhyming poem that reflects on the human capability of enslaving different races from themselves for their own ends. The poet points to different peoples, kings, and even Irish mythological figures to prove his point that enslavement is inherent to humanity: King Solomon enslaving those were not of the tribes of Israel; the building of Egyptian pyramids and the Inca cities; the construction of the Colosseum by Jewish slaves under Emperor Vespian. St Patrick and Aengus of the Boyne (a mythological figure in Celtic myth) are also mentioned in the poem. |
