Notes The speaker of the poem describes a drink from a 'dead man' in this poem. This came about when swapping stories with a barman in Brussels, whose father fought in World War I. The speaker of the poem shares that his Uncle Tomás had also fought in World War I with the Munster Fusiliers, and never received a proper burial after the slaughter at Passchendaele in Belgium. In memory of Tomás, the barman gives him a drink on the house.
