Notes The speaker of the poem describes the reality of death that awaits us all. As death cannot be avoided, the speaker encourages us to be valorous in the face of death. Giving examples, he mentions Horatio Cocles' defence of Rome from Etruscan raiders; a fisherman facing down a storm, and a soldier's defiance to the guns of death in the Somme, during World War I. The speaker rejects the mundanity and softness of life which tortures many, and encourages the 'action' of life instead - brave deeds which will outlive us.
