Notes This poem alludes to a school siege by Chechnan nationalists in Belsan, Russia, which occurred in September 2004 and led to 333 deaths. This massacre of children is likened to Massacre of the Innocents in the Bible. There is also reference to Georgian-Ossetian conflict. The poem juxtaposes these events, broadcast on the radio, with a peaceful winter scene, presumably in Ireland. Reference to the Star of Bethlehem plant as a symbol of hope in the poem.
