| Notes | The poet speaker of this poem references the border between two countries. Neither country is named, although the poet indicates in an Afterword to this collection that the poems were written while she was on a writer's residency in Slovenia. The speaker derides the borders, claiming that birds, twigs, and pieces of earth have been known to cross the arbitrary borders that humans have created. The title creates the impression of a conflict or war that has led to this situation, and the last verse appears to refer to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, a border which which can be crossed freely now as a result of the Good Friday Agreement. |
