Notes This poem highlights the difference in wealth and class in the modern world. The speaker of the poem, on holidays somewhere in which Swahili is spoken, describes a crippled street beggar to whom he gives money, on his way to have a beer in the Hilton hotel. The speaker contrasts his life - the life of a wealthy white tourist - with that of the beggar. As he drinks his pint, he acknowledges that the eyes of the man will haunt him.
