There are references to poverty and deprivation in the poem, as well as to civil unrest and revolution. This likely refers to the Nepalese Civil War, which raged from 1996-2006, and was fought between the Communist party of Nepal and the Nepalese government. The conflict led to the deaths of 17,000 people. In this publication, this poem contains a dedication, which is absent from other editions. |
